"Conversations with Victor Gaviria"

October 2, 2002

Victor Gaviria (standing right), Colombian filmmaker, addresses the audience after the evening screening of his critically acclaimed "The Rose Sellers."

Victor Gaviria, a film director from Medellin, Colombia discussed his work
with "natural actors" who essentially play themselves in two gritty
urban films: Rodrigo D. No Future (1990) and The Rose Seller (1998). His
films are a true testament of his humanitarian effort to immortalize the
short lives of urban youth for whom life and death are blended so thoroughly as to create a street culture that has come to replace the traditional family and home life.

Mr. Gaviria talks with a gathering in the Center's conference room about the role of cinema in present-day Colombia, and the influence of his work on the lives of his "natural actors."
